Experience of Psychiatric Health Care Professionals Transitioning to Tele-Counseling during COVID -19 – A Qualitative Analysis to the Benefits and Challenge
Abstract
During the recent COVID-19 crisis, treatment modalities shifted significantly from in-person sessions to technology-based advancements. This study explored the benefits and challenges perceived by mental
health care professionals in using technological services to address the challenges posed by the pandemic. A qualitative study design was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews. Data was collected between
October 22, 2020, and December 5, 2020, from Combined Military Hospitals and establishments with psychologists on their staff. Data analysis was conducted using NVIVO for thematic analysis, while demographic details were tabulated through descriptive analysis using SPSS version 23. Focus group discussions were conducted in three groups to develop items for the semi-structured interviews. Based on the formulated guidelines, qualitative analysis of the subjects was carried out using thematic analysis. The findings suggested that the transition to technological modalities was generally perceived positively by mental health care professionals. Key benefits included increased accessibility to services, flexibility in scheduling, and reduced travel-related barriers. However, challenges such as limited technological literacy, difficulties in maintaining patient engagement, and concerns about confidentiality were also identified. The study emphasized the need for proper training and infrastructure to optimize the use of technology in mental health care.
